Sportsmanship. The dictionary
defines sportsmanship as "Conduct and
attitude considered as befitting
participants in sports, especially
fairness, courtesy, striving spirit,
respect for one's opponent and grace in
winning or losing." But what does it
look like?
Edie Lehman was the epitome of
sportsmanship. A fierce competitor who
aimed for perfection every go, she was
unfailingly courteous, to other
competitors, on-lookers, show staff,
judges and most especially the horses.
Generous to a fault she frequently
loaned tack,
provided hardware or answered questions
for her fellow competitors. Her calm,
friendly manner made you feel at home
and welcome at a show. She always had a
quiet smile, a pleasant word or a casual
wave for everyone she met. As a
nationally known and respected judge,
Edie had an unerring eye in the show
ring. She was quick to praise and point
out the finer points of a go, whether it
was one of hers, her clients or
friends or a competitor's. She also
pin-pointed problem areas with
laser-like precision and shared her
perceptions if asked. Fairness was
ingrained in Edie. She didn't hold with
blaming the judge or the weather or the
environment for a less than stellar
performance. She was genuinely
delighted
when a
fellow competitor had a particularly
spectacular performance. To her the
important thing was the partnership
between horse and rider. The ribbons
would come if the partnership was good.
Edie Lehman lived a good sportsman
life. She set a high standard for the
rest of us.
